Several buildings in Budapest will be illuminated red on Wednesday, after dark, to draw attention to persecuted and martyred Christians, the State Secretary for the Aid Persecuted Christians and for the Hungary Helps Program told MTI.
Tristan Azbej said the initiative called Red Wednesday was launched in 2015 by an international Catholic aid organization called Aid to the Church in Need. It aims to draw people’s attention to one of the most significant human rights crises of our time, the persecution of Christians, which claims the lives of dozens of innocent people every day.
Since then, several, mostly European, countries have joined the initiative. One of the most spectacular light paintings is that of the Roman Colosseum, which connects the ancient persecution of Christians with the present, he added.
He explained that in 2019 Hungary joined the series of commemorations. This year, in the spirit of ecumenical thought, the churches of four Hungarian Christian denominations in Budapest will be illuminated with red light. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Reformed Church of Dezső Szilágyi Square, the Lutheran Church of Budavár and the Orthodox Church of Petőfi Square will change the color of the martyrdom.
The Secretary of State also pointed out that the government, through the Hungary Helps Program, supports persecuted Christians not only by raising awareness, but also by allowing a hundred thousand of Christians and other people persecuted for their religion to remain in their homeland in the last three and a half years.
