About us

The new Act on the Hungary Helps Program, adopted by the Parliament, entered into force on 1 January 2024. It creates a unified and transparent legal framework for Hungary’s international humanitarian aid and development policy and expands and makes the work of the Hungary Helps Agency more efficient. (ARTICLE referenced) With over 350+ projects in more than 50 countries, the HHA has extensive experience in managing development and humanitarian programmes in crisis zones around the world. The Hungary Helps Agency has offices in N’Djamena (Chad), Amman (Jordan) and Brussels.

Objectives and principles

As a government agency, we carry out our activities in the spirit of Hungary’s Fundamental Law, with a special emphasis on respecting the freedom and culture of other nations. Our aim is to provide effective and rapid assistance at the local level in response to local needs, while respecting humanitarian principles and human rights. We plan and implement our projects in partnership with local community representatives, especially local faith-based organisations, to ensure that the support we provide is used professionally, efficiently, and transparently.

Tasks and focus areas

Tendering and project management
We provide fast, effective, and direct aid through international humanitarian aid programmes, donations and grant agreements, responding to needs in crisis zones. We organise humanitarian and development projects: we tender and then implement the disbursement of aid, monitor transactions, provide the necessary engineering and technical coordination and control, ensure transparency and efficiency, and report on our activities.
International cooperation and partnerships
We cooperate with other organisations and participate in bilateral and multilateral humanitarian development aid projects with partner countries, with particular emphasis on cooperation with humanitarian organisations of the Visegrád countries and other EU Member States. We plan the use of humanitarian aid with local partners and carry out regular field visits.

DG ECHO Partnership

The Agency’s application for accreditation, submitted to the Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (hereinafter: DG ECHO) in August 2020, was accepted in November 2021. (Read more HERE).
Certificate of Quality in Humanitarian Volunteering
In March 2023, the European Commission awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Humanitarian Volunteering to Hungary Helps Agency. (Read more HERE).
Fundraising
We also collect and manage donations from individuals, which we use to achieve our project goals (linked)
Scholarship program
The Christian Youth Scholarship Programme was set up by the Hungarian government to support higher education for Christian young people in crisis regions who are persecuted for their faith. The scholarship programme is organised by our agency. At the end of their studies, scholarship holders return to their home countries and use the knowledge they have gained during their training to help their communities.
