Supporting the Institutions of the Order of Malta Lebanon Serving Elderly and Persons with Disabilities

Lebanon has been facing a prolonged political and economic crisis that continues to affect the daily lives of its most vulnerable citizens. The social protection of the elderly is particularly fragile: around 80% of retirees rely entirely on family support, as most lack both social security and pension benefits. Persistently high food and medicine prices further increase their vulnerability. Alongside the elderly, persons with disabilities face significant challenges as well. Representing roughly 10–15% of the Lebanese population, they frequently encounter systemic exclusion, discrimination, and limited access to social and healthcare services. In response to these pressing needs, the Order of Malta Lebanon submitted a grant proposal to the Hungary Helps Agency in 2024 to ensure the continued operation of four of its institutions – in Kefraya, Roum, Chabrouh, and KfarDebian – which provide housing, care, and rehabilitation for elderly residents and people with disabilities. Despite the country’s crises, the Order has remained steadfast in its mission. In Chabrouh and KfarDebian, for instance, more than 550 persons with disabilities participated in various developmental, social, and community programs. The Hungary Helps support made it possible not only to maintain the basic operations of these centers but also to provide regular social and healthcare services, as well as food aid for those in need. Through the program, more than 650 elderly people received nutritious meals on a regular basis, while residents of the institutions could participate in medical, nursing, craft, spiritual, and communal activities. This project has strengthened the Order of Malta Lebanon’s ability to continue offering meaningful, compassionate assistance to the country’s most vulnerable elderly and persons with disabilities – preserving their dignity, wellbeing, and hope, even amid Lebanon’s ongoing crisis.
