The construction of the Meltho International School

During the rule of the Islamic State terrorist organization, the Christian communities of the city of Mosul and the Nineveh Plains faced severe persecution, forcing many to flee their homes to escape violence. After the defeat of the Islamist terrorist group, some returned to their homes, but many Christian families saw returning as too risky. In this desperate situation, Nicodemus Daoud Matti Sharaf, the Syrian Orthodox Archbishop of Iraq, sought help from the Hungarian government to build a new school center, believing that it is the mission of Christians to learn and teach. With the support of the Hungary Helps Program, the center was established in Iraqi Kurdistan to provide the children of resettled Christian families the opportunity to grow up in a quality institution that also teaches Christian religious education. The educational institution, capable of accommodating one thousand students, was inaugurated by President Katalin Novák on December 10, 2022. The school center plays a crucial role not only in education but also in rebuilding the community. It serves as a symbol that the Christian community not only survives but strengthens and thrives through solidarity and support. The center has brought hope to the lives of the families living here, offering them the possibility of remaining and prospering in their homeland.
