Our contribution to the Hungarian Interchurch Aid has been pivotal in revitalizing agriculture in the conflict-ravaged northern region of the Niniveh Governorate, Iraq. Through this initiative, we have supported dozens of local farmers by increasing efficiency through the introduction of permaculture farming techniques, the renovation of a well, and the purchase of water pumping systems and solar panels to power them. We also facilitated the construction of water reservoirs. These improvements have significantly enhanced the farmers’ ability to grow and preserve produce in a region where the rise of the Islamic State terrorist organization caused extensive damage to infrastructure, leaving many agricultural areas, irrigation systems, and greenhouses neglected and in disrepair. By restoring agricultural operations, the Alkosh region can once again access fresh, locally grown produce at lower prices, reducing reliance on external supply chains. Moreover, the rehabilitation of agriculture will stimulate the local economy by creating new jobs in related sectors, such as manufacturing and food processing. The second phase of the project will further strengthen the region’s agricultural potential by purchasing a food processing unit and providing training to local farmers in vegetable fermentation. This phase will also focus on developing operational agricultural enterprises and advancing food processing capabilities, fostering long-term economic resilience and self-sufficiency in the region.
