Restoration of a cross on the outskirts of Subotica

In 2021, Marko Kopunovic, a dual Serbian-Hungarian citizen, approached the Hungarian Consulate General in Subotica to ask for help in restoring a cross erected by his ancestors on the outskirts of Subotica, which had probably been torn down by migrants on their way to Hungary in early 2021. Located on the outskirts of Subotica, next to the Radanovac forest, the cross was erected in 1896 by local shepherds. The cross has important Hungarian connections: the plaque on the cross is in Croatian, but it begins in Hungarian with the phrase "For the Glory of God", and according to information from the Hungarian Association of Vojvodina, the cross is considered to be associated with the Bunyevac community. The restoration of the cross was undertaken by the Roman Catholic Parish of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Subotica. The restoration of the cross helps to bring people together and has a symbolic meaning. The restoration and reconstruction of the cross was completed in 2022.
