Developing Lebanon’s Education System and Strengthening Inclusive Learning
Supported by the Hungary Helps Program, the project focused on two complementary objectives: enhancing inclusive education and improving educational infrastructure. Since October 2019, Lebanon has been grappling with a severe economic collapse, which has left approximately 80% of its population living below the poverty line. Among the most affected are young people with special educational needs or learning difficulties, who are often excluded from the traditional school system — placing a heavy emotional and financial burden on their families. Within this context, the IDEAL Program was launched in collaboration with Lipscomb University (USA) and Notre Dame University (NDU) in Lebanon. The initiative established an inclusive higher education model that enables young people with cognitive challenges to pursue learning, personal growth, and active participation in society. A total of 17 students took part in the program, and 8 successfully graduated at the first commencement ceremony. The program empowered participants to live more independent, confident lives and become valued members of their communities. Lebanon’s education sector is also deeply affected by the ongoing energy crisis, particularly among Christian schools that educate students of various faiths, including Muslim pupils. Frequent and unpredictable power outages make it difficult to maintain regular teaching activities. To address this challenge, the project’s second component focused on improving energy sustainability at the Beirut Baptist School (BBS), where a modern hybrid solar–generator–battery system was installed. The new setup ensures reliable power supply, reduces environmental impact, and provides a safer, cleaner, and more resilient learning environment. Both components of the project were completed successfully. Together, they reflect a holistic approach — combining human and technological development — to help Lebanese youth and educational institutions build a more inclusive, sustainable, and hopeful future in their own communities.
