Hope amid the ruins: life-saving developments in Yemen

Following the renovation of the maternity center, which is still in operation today, another life-saving development began in 2025: the construction of the camp’s emergency department. The foundation stone was laid in the first half of the year, and since then the foundations have been built and the walls are already being constructed. The new facility will provide fast and safe medical care for refugees and members of the host community.
The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Human Access for Partnership and Development. Its goal is to make emergency care available to the thousands of people living in the camp – in conditions that meet basic hygiene and health requirements.
In Yemen, more than half of the healthcare infrastructure is unusable or severly outdated. In rural areas and near refugee camps, medical care has practically collapsed, so any new developments can literally save lives.
The Kharaz camp – Yemen’s only official refugee camp – is located in the south of the country, near Aden. It was originally set up for African refugees, mainly from Somalia and Ethiopia, but today thousands of internally displaced people have also found shelter here. The camp’s infrastructure is severly overburdened, supplies are inadequate, and the situation is particularly critical in terms of the health of women and children.
The first development of the Hungary Helps Program was completed in 2021 with the cooperation of the Charitable Society for Social Welfare (CSSW), a Yemeni partner organization: a new maternity ward was built, which now provides obstetric and gynecological care to thousands of women every year.
The construction of the emergency department, which began in 2025, is a continuation of this work. The Hungary Helps Program remains committed to supporting the development of the Kharaz refugee camp in order to contribute to the long-term stabilization of healthcare in the region and the preservation of human dignity.
These investments not only provide immediate assistance, but also enable people to remain in their own communities and rebuild their lives in a safe environment – thereby preventing forced migration.
We will provide further updates on the progress of the project and the details of the construction in the near future!
